Set up in 2001, the Dot NAME generic top-level domain extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. At first, just third-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to acquire john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already acquired 3rd-level domains remained working.
